Welcome to our latest blog post about Boone – Cat Portrait in Oils. We are so thrilled to share this beautiful oil painting of Boone. A very special and much loved cat whose portrait was commissioned by Arlene Richford.
A few years ago, we had the pleasure of painting Arlene’s sister’s cat, Tyson Richford. His portrait still hangs proudly in their home. When Arlene reached out to us following the heart breaking loss of Boone, we felt incredibly honoured to be asked to create a lasting tribute to her much loved companion.
Over the course of several days, Arlene and I chatted back and forth. She kindly shared a selection of beautiful photos of Boone. After exploring lots of ideas and working through different mock-ups together, Arlene chose one that truly spoke to her. A gorgeous side profile of Boone looking out of her bedroom window. There was something so peaceful and thoughtful about Boone’s pose, bathed in soft sunlight. It was the perfect choice.
Boone – Cat Portrait in Oils
Arlene shared a few important details that she felt really captured Boone’s essence. Her striking calico and tiger markings, those beautiful green eyes, and the way the sunlight streamed in through the window in that special moment. Originally, Arlene was considering a pencil portrait and we discussed ways to retain the atmosphere even in black and white. But after seeing both mock ups, Arlene decided to go for an oil painting to bring all of those beautiful elements to life in full colour.
To give Boone the space she needed in the composition and to make sure we could capture every detail from her expression to her elegant posture, we upgraded the canvas from the 12 x 10 size to a 16 x 12. All at no extra cost to Arlene. We always want to ensure that each portrait gets the room it deserves on the canvas.
Arlene was so warm and thoughtful throughout the process. She told us:
“I really cannot put into words how wonderful you have been through this process while I try to give Boone as much respect as possible to properly honor her wonderful companionship.”

When the final portrait arrived in Arlene’s inbox, she emailed to say:
“It is BEAUTIFUL! ! ! I cannot wait to see it here in person!”
