The Pet Portrait of Nell

Welcome to our latest blog post, featuring the pet portrait of Nell. Just before the world changed with the arrival of Covid, I had a lovely call from Tracey while I was out on a quick shopping run, stocking up on supplies (as we all were back then!). We had a lovely chat, and she asked plenty of questions about the commission process, which I was more than happy to answer, all while driving to shopping!

Not long after, we arranged for Tracey and Kevin to visit us in person, bringing Nell along to be photographed at our studio. It’s always such a treat to meet our clients and their pets face to face. Because we work with people from all over the world, these chances are rare and really special to us.

Nell, a gorgeous and very well-behaved Staffy, was a natural in front of the camera. She modelled beautifully for her portrait, and her photos made a perfect reference for Nicholas to work from.

The pet portrait of Nell was painted in oils on a 12 x 10 Italian Linen canvas, shows her happy expression and signature look — a little tilt of the head, glossy black coat, and soft, soulful eyes. Nicholas thoroughly enjoyed capturing her personality, and the final result is full of warmth and character.

Nell’s Painting

Here is a photo of Nicholas’s hand on the painting with his brush. I always try to take photos like this is i can as it tends to add scale to the piece for our viewers.

Tracey and Kevin later sent us this lovely photo of Nell’s portrait hanging proudly in their home. Tracey and Kevin chose a linen slip and rich wood moulding to frame the portrait. Also finishing it beautifully with a custom plaque engraved with Nell’s name. We absolutely love seeing her looking so regal and loved.
