Welcome to our latest portrait and blog post about Lottie’s oil painting – Tibetan Terrier portrait. Every so often, a portrait comes along that feels just that little bit closer to home and this one was particularly special for us.
When Mike first got in touch to commission a portrait of his beloved Tibetan Terrier, we instantly connected. Not only was he drawn to Nicholas’s painting style, but when he discovered that we also had a black Tibetan Terrier (our Lily!), it sealed the deal. His girl looked so much like our Lily. Black coat, white chest, soulful (naughty!) brown eyes. Reading about her brought a lump to our throats more than once.
Mike sent us a beautiful online album filled with photos of both his Tibetan Terriers. Lottie and her big brother Moses. Nicholas and I spent a lovely evening looking through the collection, smiling at the familiar little expressions and poses that brought back memories of our own Lily as a puppy. So many of the photos were full of character, but we were especially drawn to one that captured her soft brown eyes and thoughtful expression. Mike called it her “thinking pose,” and it truly was.
He kindly asked us to include the tiny pale spot next to her nostril — a lovely detail that made her who she was. He also requested that we incorporate a bit of the red blanket from one of Moses’ photos too. This was lovely as it added a warm, comforting touch to the final composition.
Originally, Mike had considered a smaller size. However after chatting about proportions and space, he decided on a 12 x 10 oil painting. It was the perfect size for the shape of the composition.
Work In Progress of Lottie
We thought it would be lovely to share a few behind the scenes stages of Lottie’s portrait as it came to life on the easel. In the first stage, Nicholas blocked in the main shapes and structure of her face. He also is starting to build the depth of her rich black fur. Even at this early stage, you can already see that Lottie is beginning to emerge.

As the second layer developed, Nicholas started adding some colour to the background. Along with the red blanket Lottie was laying on. He also started to blend her fur into the background. You can also see the beautiful pale mark just next to her nostril, which Mike had specifically asked us to include.

By the stage below, Nicholas was adding finer details in the fur and the texture around her nose.

The Finished Portrait of Lottie
When Mike saw the final painting, he wrote:
“It really is a stunning picture, and captures her in her thinking pose.”
“Nicholas has captured her so well and I can’t wait to see her again.”
It meant the world to us to hear that.

Lottie’s Oil Painting – Tibetan Terrier Portrait Framed
Here are a few photos of the portrait framed.

We would like to officially thank Mike and his family for entrusting us with this very personal and emotional commission. It was a privilege for Nicholas to paint Lottie. We are so happy that she has a special place in your home.
Hi Melanie and Nicholas,
Just to let you know the picture has arrived safely. I opened it up (I can see what you mean about all the packaging) and it’s gorgeous. The color and the detail is amazing. I’m so happy with it, and now need to work out where to put it. I’m also happy that I did get you to frame it too. As you say, the quality of the frame, and the colors, really do compliment the painting. It makes a big difference, and makes the picture look much larger. Thank you again. If ever I can be a reference for you both please feel free to ask.
Mike

Lotties Portrait in Situ
Mike kindly sent us a photo of Lottie’s portrait hanging proudly in their home and we absolutely love it. The frame is perfect and it nestles happily between two sunny windows. We can’t think of a more perfect spot for her. Knowing the portrait brings happy and funny memories each time they pass by is exactly why we love to do what we do. Thank you so much Mike for sharing this lovely glimpse into your home.

Hi Melanie and Nicholas,
I thought I would share some pictures of Lottie’s portrait with you now that we have redecorated the room and the old wallpaper has gone. The picture looks fantastic, and we’ve very happy with her.
Thanks again,
Mike
