Welcome to my latest blog post the Pencil Dog Portrait – Drawing of Watson. My pencil drawing features the handsome Watson, a richly coloured golden orange Vizsla dog with soulful eyes and a steady gaze. Watson’s owners, Tana and Alistair, originally hoped we could meet in person so I could take my own reference photos. Sadly, this was right at the beginning of the Covid pandemic and like so many plans during that time, our meet-up wasn’t meant to be. Instead, they kindly took a range of lovely photos themselves. From those, this portrait came to life.
As many of my regular readers might know, with it being Covid times, I took most of the summer out of the studio to work on garden renovation projects. I did a couple of drawings but on the whole I had a break from work. Although the work I did with the builders and with the logs outside was probably harder work, I am now back and drawing at my easel properly. This portrait was a drawing I was really looking forward to starting. Watson and he was drawn at 16 x 12 size. I hope you like him!

Packaging The Portrait
I’m packing the portrait here, ready to send off to my client. A couple of years ago, I planned to create some new promotional material. But when Covid hit, printers shut down, and life got busy, I never got around to designing anything. I am hoping to in the near future and have a few ideas. Perhaps postcards or a folded card of some kind. Ideas always welcome from my clients and readers as to what they would like to receive!! Maybe something that they can keep. I find that half of the promotional material I receive goes straight in the recycle, which is completely wasteful.

You might also enjoy seeing another recent drawing, Jasper the Deer-Head Chihuahua, such a contrast in character, yet equally rewarding to draw. If you are interested in commissioning a pencil portrait of your own dog, feel free to get in touch. I’d love to hear your pet’s story and help create something meaningful for you.
