Welcome to my latest blog post about a Ginger Cat Pencil Drawing – Portrait of Pippin. Pippin was an absolute joy to draw in pencil. His owner, Mark, got in touch from Ontario, Canada, after seeing what he thought was my work featured in the North American Falconers Journal. I had to smile when I read his email, as I’ve never advertised in that publication and I’m based in the UK. So it must have been another artist with a similar style… or a similar name! I never did find out!
“Hello, I saw your advert in the North American Falconers Journal. If I placed an order for a 16×12 drawing of our cat, could you tell me when I could expect it?”

We exchanged a few messages, and Mark sent a wonderful selection of reference photos. It turns out Mark and his family have six cats in total! I had a good look through the images and one stood out straight away. My reply to Mark was – “Wow, six cats! My absolute favourite is the ginger cat. It’s a stunning photo, beautiful pose with lots of detail that I can get to grips with in a drawing. It will look amazing”. Mark said the cat in question was Pippin and agreed that he’d make a perfect subject for the portrait. We settled on an 11 x 14 inch pencil drawing. Once it was complete, I sent over a few preview images before shipping the original.

A Portrait for Pippin – Client Feedback from Canada
Mark was incredibly kind and appreciative throughout the process and once the artwork arrived in Ontario, he wrote:
“Hi Melanie, I wanted to let you know that your package arrived today. The drawing of Pippin is amazing.”
I was so pleased to hear that the portrait made it safely across the Atlantic. Plus that the family was happy with how Pippin turned out. Pippin was such a pleasure to work on in pencil.
If you’d like to commission a pencil portrait of your own cat, I’d love to hear from you. Whether it’s a single subject or multiple pets, feel free to get in touch with your favourite photos. I can help guide you on size and layout options. You can also take a look at another cat drawing here on my blog. The pencil portrait of Lucy and Charlie, two Tonkinese cats.
Finally, thank you again to Mark and Pippin for this lovely commission. Also to the mysterious magazine lookalike that brought us together!
