Welcome to my latest blog post about my Black Labrador Pencil Portrait of Betty. This gorgeous black Labrador was an absolute joy to draw and I am so pleased to be able to share the completed pencil drawing with you all. Commissioned as a special 60th birthday gift (albeit a little belated!), Betty’s portrait has now found its way to her owner, bringing smiles all around.
Amy first reached out to me enquiring about a pencil portrait of a black Labrador around 10 x 12 inches in size. After discussing timelines and details, she and her family decided to go ahead with the commission. Given Betty’s beautiful black coat, a greyscale pencil drawing was perfect to capture the depth and texture of her fur.
The Process
I worked closely with Amy throughout, ensuring she was happy with the portrait with photos of Betty so she could see what the drawing was like from a number of angles. I always encourage my clients to be involved, and Amy and her family actively shared their lovely feedback throughout the process. As I neared completion, they requested a small tonal adjustment, which I was more than happy to make. It’s always important that each piece is just right!
After making the final tweaks, I carefully packed the drawing and sent it off. I was thrilled to hear that it arrived safely. I was even more delighted that Amy’s mum absolutely loved it! The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that my artwork brings smiles to the recipients.
