Welcome to my latest pet portrait to come off of my ease – Dexter’s Pencil Portrait – Labrador Drawing. I am so pleased to be able to write a blog post about my pencil portrait of Dexter. He was a much loved Labrador, commissioned by Joe from the US. This portrait holds a special place in my heart, as Dexter passed away during the commission process.
Joe initially reached out to commission an oil painting but later decided that a pencil drawing would best capture Dexter. I drew Dexter at the 14″ x 11″ size and I feel his portrait depicts him full of character and warmth. I hope you do too!

The Commission
Joe first contacted us while planning a professional photoshoot for Dexter. He wanted to ensure that we had a high quality reference image that would showcase Dexter’s personality. At that ppint whther it would be a pencil drawing or an oil painting, we were thrilled to hear that Joe had planned on getting some really good quality photos of Dexter for us to use.
Joe was thrilled when he saw the final photo of Dexter…
“I think it looks amazing. I really look forward to it. I think you captured him perfectly. I just have to find the correct frame and hire a professional immediately when I get it!”

A Special Tribute to Dexter
Sadly, Dexter passed away shortly after the photoshoot, making this portrait even more meaningful to Joe and his family. Joe shared how grateful he was for the decision to hire a photographer before Dexter passed, allowing him to have lasting memories of his beloved companion.
A pencil portrait is a classic and timeless way to honour a pet. The soft tonal values and fine details bring out the depth of expression in a way that feels elegant and sophisticated. For dogs like Labradors, pencil drawings highlight their beautiful fur textures and soulful eyes, making them an excellent medium for capturing their personality.

New Packaging for Pencil Drawings!
Over the last few months I have been devising new ways of presenting my pencil drawings. This is mainly because as I am no longer offering framing for my pencil drawings. We still are for the oil paintings though. I wanted to find a way of giving my clients a lovely experience on opening my drawings. Plus a way of clients being able to present them as a gift.
We used to create gift voucher boxes similarly this with ribbon and tissue paper, however now they are all handled by Moonpig which I find is much easier.
I researched a number of companies for photography prints boxes. It wasn’t easy but I found a range of sizes that worked with my portrait sizes. I had used white ribbon and white tissue paper on the gift voucher boxes, but I found it looked a little ‘wedding’ like. So opted for a cross between Tiffany and Fortnums & Masons colour. Thanks to two lovely companies on Etsy I have gathered the materials to bring it all to life.
I have also designed some new stationary to go along side which fits beautifully within the box too. I hope you like it, let me know what you think!
