Welcome to our latest horse portrait, Horse Portrait in Oils – Oil Painting of Maska. We are thrilled to be able to add this painting to our blog. Maska is a beautiful Percheron cross from a sunny ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This painting was commissioned by Rachael as a surprise gift for her husband Jeremiah, celebrating the bond he shares with Maska. Maska is a 17-hand draft cross, not only known for his size and strength but for his incredibly gentle soul. Rachael described him as a “contradiction between his size and his sensitivity,” and that balance became the heart of this portrait.
“He did not have an easy life before Jeremiah, and through their love and trust, they’ve created a bond of stewardship.”
Rachael first got in touch to reserve a space on our commission list. Knowing that Nicholas would have fairly long commission list, she wanted to plan ahead. This portrait would be a meaningful gift just before the arrival of their first child. Capturing the right pose was key. Maska’s grand stature was important to reflect, so we worked closely on several mock-ups and ideas before settling on the final composition.
“The essence of his sweetness is absolutely captured in the mockup… but I’m wondering if there’s a way to show more of his body or girth?”
We adjusted the layout and also considered the scale carefully. Ultimately chose a 24 x 18 inch canvas to reflect his strength and grace in equal measure.
In Progress – From Sketch to Paint
The early stages of Maska’s painting began with a careful sepia underpainting to map out his shape, lighting, and posture. We paid close attention to his soft, intelligent expression. Nicholas delicately softened a few small scars around his eye at Rachael’s request.
“Those were temporary… and I know Jeremiah wouldn’t want to permanently capture those marks.”

As each layer developed, Nicholas brought out the subtle blue-grey tones of Maska’s coat, balancing strength with softness.

A Closer Look – Fine Detail & Scale
These close up photos show Nicholas adding the final touches to Maska’s portrait with a fine brush. Also seeing the painting alongside his hand really puts the level of detail into perspective. From the softness around the eye to the subtle shading on the muzzle.

It’s these quiet, refined details that bring a portrait like this to life. Capturing not only how a horse looks, but how they feel to those who love them.

The Finished Portrait
The final painting captures Maska’s calm, wise presence against a soft neutral background that allows his pale coat to glow.
“The portrait is incredible… I’m so grateful to you both. No changes to suggest, it’s just perfect. The evolution of this painting is truly amazing. It is so exciting to see it come to life.”
We’re deeply honoured to have preserved this moment in time for Rachael and Jeremiah. Especially during such a meaningful season of their lives.

Beautifully Packaged, Ready to Gift
When it came time to send Maska’s portrait, we carefully wrapped it in crisp purple tissue paper with satin ribbon for a truly special presentation. Alongside the portrait, we also included care instructions and a thank you note. Plus a bit about opening the portraits and them being a special moment. Also telling clients not to forget taking photos along the way. Every detail was designed to make unwrapping the painting feel like part of the gift itself.
Whether you’re commissioning a portrait as a surprise or for yourself, we simply want a beautiful unwrapping experience. We always ensure each package feels as thoughtful as the artwork inside.
