Welcome to my blog post all about the Golden Cockerpoo Pencil Portrait of Obi! This adorable dog was commissioned by Ben as a very special Christmas gift for his wife. Obi is a 7 month old Golden Cockerpoo, a beautiful mix of Golden Retriever, Miniature Poodle and Cocker Spaniel. Based in south west London, Ben got in touch with me after discovering my website and falling in love with my detailed pencil drawings.
Ben kindly sent a number of photos of Obi for me to work from. We quickly settled on the perfect reference that captured Obi’s personality and charm. Ben wrote – “That is the perfect pic to base it on – he has a rather impressive Mohawk which is captured in the mock-up.” I also loved his expression and his slightly tilted head worked beautifully for a classic pencil drawing. Once the portrait was complete, Ben sent this lovely message …
“Look utterly delicious Melanie. Wow wow wow.”

I Love Drawing Golden Cockerpoos!
If you are considering commissioning a portrait of your own Cockerpoo, Golden Cockerpoo, or any doodle mix, I’d love to hear from you. I really loved drawing Obi and if you have a dog similar to him… email or message me! I would love to work with you!

Choosing the Right Size for Your Portrait
Ben opted for the 18 x 14 inch size as they had the perfect place in their home to hang the portrait. If you’re unsure about sizing, I’m always happy to help. Many clients like to mock-up sizes on their walls using paper to get a feel for what fits best. A slightly larger portrait can also work well for breeds like Cockerpoos where there’s lots of detail in the fur to get to grips with.
The photo Ben chose of Obi showed him looking upwards, tongue out and full of character. Side or three quarter profiles often work beautifully in pencil. If you would like tips on how to photograph your dog for a portrait, just let me know. A well-lit, high-resolution photo with natural expressions makes all the difference.

A Peek Into My Studio
This is where all of the portraits come to life! You can see Obi’s portrait on my drawing board alongside the reference photo I used. It’s also such a lovely spot to work, full of light, plants and inspiration. And if you look closely, you’ll spot Lily sitting in my chair. She’s my studio companion and is always by my side.
