Welcome to our latest blog post about the Dalmatian Pet Portrait in Oils. This beautiful Dalmatian oil painting of Saffy was commissioned as a surprise birthday gift for her owner in the USA. Saffy was painted by Nicholas and sent safely overseas in time for the special day.
Sadly, while Nicholas was painting Saffy’s portrait, we received the heart breaking news that she had passed away. This made the commission even more special, becoming not only a birthday gift but a lasting tribute to a much loved family member. The first stage of the portrait is below and Terri’s comments said it all….
“OMG! It’s perfect. I’m crying. I had to close the image. It was so lovely.”
— Terri

The Story Behind the Painting
Terri got in touch with us from the USA to arrange the portrait in secret as a gift for her husband John. She wanted a realistic oil painting of Saffy, one that would celebrate her life and personality. Despite the short timeline for Johns birthday, we were able to fit the commission in, to ensure it arrived in time for John’s birthday.
“Thanks Melanie. I’m so excited. It will be very hard to keep it hidden till John’s birthday!”
— Terri
Nicholas worked from the photos provided, focusing on Saffy’s beautiful markings. Terri actually made one alteration or addition to the portrait mid way. She asked if there could be a hint of Saffy’s tongue just in her opened mouth slightly. As that’s how they always saw her and would remember her. No problem at all!
“Please give Nicholas a HUGE kiss from me. It is so lovely. Perfect!”
— Terri

Why Dalmatians Are So Striking painted in Oils
Dalmatians are one of the most recognisable and unique dog breeds, known for their signature black spots, graceful build and lively spirit. From an artistic perspective, they offer a wonderful balance of bold contrast and soft detail. Capturing their coat in oil requires patience and layering, which Nicholas did, as each spot has its own texture and tone, especially where it curves with the muscles beneath the fur.
Nicholas always paints in layers, building detail and depth gradually. In Saffy’s case, he focused on balancing her markings with a soft, cool background that would give her a gentle glow without overpowering her, being full focus in the scene.
Commissioning a Dalmatian Oil Painting – FAQ
How do I commission a Dalmatian portrait?
Simply send us your favourite photos and we will work with you to create a mock-up or design that captures your dog perfectly.
What size do you recommend?
We often paint Dalmatians at sizes like Saffy’s at 12 x 10 inches for head studies, 16 x 12 for head and chest. If budget allows an 18 x 14 would make for a life sized head and chest painting.
Can you ship internationally?
Absolutely! We ship all over the world, including the USA like with did with Saffy. We pack each portrait with great care to ensure it arrives safely.
Can you work from just one photo?
Yes! Ideally, a few supporting photos help, but if you have a single clear image, we can often make it work beautifully.
Happy Clients
Terri kindly let us know once Saffy’s painting had arrived safely in the USA…
“Just letting you know that Saffy arrived safely on Monday as expected. She is beautiful. Thank you so much. John’s birthday in a week so all is well. With the deepest gratitude.”
We were thrilled to have played a small part in honouring Saffy and celebrating her memory and making a birthday special.
