Welcome to my blog post all about the Full Body Pencil Drawing of Black Labrador Emrik. Jacqueline in Australia commissioned this very special portrait in memory of her much loved dog, Emrik. She contacted me after seeing a classic Cecil Aldin drawing, which inspired her to request a full body Labrador sketch.
Jacqueline wrote, “I’m inquiring about a pet dog pencil portrait, one that has more than the head (perhaps full body — got the idea after seeing one by Cecil Aldin’s lab pics!) Then I saw your work on your website.”
Emrik had sadly passed away and Jacqueline was gathering her thoughts and photos to create a fitting tribute. I’m always happy to work with clients to find the best photo or combination of photos. Jacqueline sent over a selection, pointing out her favourites and what she liked about each one. Together, we narrowed the photos down to a lovely, natural pose that captured Emrik’s character.
Paper Cut-outs for Size
Jacqueline had been using paper cut-outs at home to work out the best size. I often recommend clients do this if they are unable to visualise sizes. You can use anything, newspaper, cereal packet or plain printer paper. You can then hold them up where you are thinking about displaying the drawings. Don’t forget to leave room around the edge for framing! Jacqueline chose the 14 x 11 inch size which works beautifully for a full-body pose.

The portrait was posted to Australia. I was so happy to hear it arrived safely on its long journey. Jacqueline wrote..
“Dear Melanie, thank you so much for Emrik’s portrait. It arrived yesterday afternoon. (Beautifully wrapped). It is lovely. I will send a photo when I have it framed.”

Client Photos and Framed Portrait
Jacqueline kindly shared a photo of herself posing with the drawing and another of it framed. I always love seeing my portraits framed and this one looked especially beautiful. Framed with care and pride, it’s now a lasting tribute to Emrik, who continues to watch over his family.

Sending Pet Portraits to Australia
I often draw portraits for clients in Australia. The postage is a little more expensive than other parts of the world, but it’s a long way to go! In fact, the distance from Wales to Australia is around 10,500 miles. That’s quite the journey for a pencil sketch, but always worth it.
If you’re based in Australia and considering a pet portrait, I’d be delighted to help. We can work together using your favourite photos and I’ll handle the packing and shipping with care.
