Welcome to our latest pet portrait blog post about a Boston Terrier Oil Portrait of Hudson & Hannah. This painting was created by Nicholas Beall and was commissioned as a gift for our client’s mother. Hudson & Hannah have grown up together, making this portrait incredibly special. Their owner, Kaylyn, chose one of the family’s favourite photos as the reference and gave Nicholas the task of bringing them to life on canvas.
The Commission and Creative Process
Kaylyn initially reached out with plans to commission a single dog portrait, but after some thought, she decided that Hudson and Hannah together would make the perfect first painting. She hoped to gift this piece to her mother, who has cherished these two Boston Terriers for years.
Choosing the right size and composition was an important step. After discussing all the options, Kaylyn decided on a 16” x 12” portrait orientation, which suited both the composition and the background beautifully. To ensure the best possible composition, Nicholas made a few artistic adjustments to the original photo. Nicholas slightly moved Hannah to create a more balanced layout. He removed the leads to achieve a cleaner, more natural look. He also adjusted the collars, changing Hudson’s collar to blue for better contrast.

The painting began with an underpainting stage, seen in the progress photos above, where Nicholas carefully mapped out the tones and details before layering rich colours and textures. Below Nicholas began to add the river and trees behind to create a lovely overall calming feeling to the painting.

As you can see in the photo below the portrait has come together beautifully and Nicholas is just adding the final touches.

Kaylyn’s Reaction
When Kaylyn saw the finished portrait, her response was amazing…
“I love it! Wow, Nicholas did an excellent job, I cannot stop looking at it. I’m so excited. I want to thank you for this wonderful experience. In addition to the painting being so well done and beautiful, you’ve been great at communicating about the process and updates. I’m so excited to have this painting and will reach out for future portraits.”
We love reading our clients feedback and this truly makes our jobs so special. We feel incredibly honoured to create this portrait for Kaylyn’s family. You can watch a video below of the painting prior to sending it to Kaylyn.
Packing the Boston Terriers!
I have to say we didn’t know that much about Boston Terriers prior to this painting, it made us do some research. Originally bred in the late 1800s, they were once called the “American Gentleman” due to their refined appearance and friendly temperament. How lovely is that! We have found that Boston Terriers are a dream to paint and can’t wait to have the opportunity to work with the breed again in the future. Here you can see I have packed the portrait and its ready to send.
