Cocker Spaniel Pencil Portrait of Widgeon

Welcome to my latest blog post of the Cocker Spaniel pencil portrait of Widgeon. Her portrait was commissioned by returning client David as a surprise birthday gift for his wife, Sarah. I first had the pleasure of working with David back in 2012 when I drew a portrait of their two spaniels called Maverick and Goose. David then commissioned me in 2015, for a pencil drawing of his mums Springer Spaniel called Ella. You can see that portrait here – Pencil Pet Portrait of Ella. So when David got in touch again I was delighted!

David sent over a fantastic set of photos of Widgeon. One, in particular stood out immediately. It captured Widgeon’s soulful eyes and her flowing ears with incredible clarity. I created two mock-ups so David could choose. While he loved both, he decided the first photo truly captured her essence.

When deciding on size, David wanted to match Ella’s portrait which I had drawn at 12 x 10 inches. We discussed how a frame and mount would increase the overall dimensions, so 12 x 10 felt just right to showcase all the gorgeous detail without overwhelming the wall space.

Drawing Widgeon in Pencil

The Cocker Spaniel pencil portrait of Widgeon was an absolute joy to draw. I think spaniels are one of my favourite breeds to have on my drawing desk. I loved working on her fur, you can see a close up of the pencil work below with a photo of my hand adding final touches.

Final Cocker Spaniel Drawing

Here is the finished portrait of Wigeon the Cocker Spaniel for David to give to his Wife Sarah for her birthday. David messaged when he saw the finished photo of the drawing and this was our conversation…

Melanie – I hope you feel I have captured her well!
David – Now can you send me a picture of the drawing rather than the photo?!
Amazing lost for words, but knew I would be.
Thank you!
I can’t wait to see the actual picture….
I keep sneaking a peak at the photo you sent! It is stunning, thank you so much for doing it so quick as well. I’ll send a picture of Sarah opening it on Monday.

As you can see David was thrilled with the portrait and it was my task then to pack everything up and send it Special Delivery to make sure it arrived on time for the special birthday.

Packed and Ready for Gifting

As you can see from the photos below, I carefully packed the portrait using a black presentation box with ribbon. Inside, I included care instructions, a thank you card and my printed materials. Every portrait I send out is a special gift and this one was no exception.

The portrait of Wigeon all packed and ready to send to the client.

A Very Special Birthday Surprise

David managed to keep the portrait a secret until Sarah’s birthday. On the big day, he filmed her opening it and her reaction was everything. Every time I watch it I well up a little. It’s so lovely to know the drawing made Sarah’s day so special. Plus of course a little comic relief from their grandson William too! I’m incredibly grateful to David for sharing such a personal video. It means the world to know that Widgeon’s portrait brought so much joy.

It’s always a privilege to work with returning clients. Being chosen again nearly 10 years later to create a second portrait is such an honour. David’s feedback was wonderful throughout, and it was a delight to work with him again.

Commissioning a Cocker Spaniel Portrait

Thank you for reading my blog post Cocker Spaniel Pencil Portrait of Widgeon. Cocker Spaniels are one of the most popular breeds I draw and it’s easy to see why. Their expressive eyes and beautifully sleek coats make them a perfect subject for pencil portraits. If you’re considering a commission of your own Cocker Spaniel, think about what makes your dog special. A head study like Widgeon’s works well to show off facial features, while a full-body drawing captures energy and posture.

If you are unsure which photo to use, I can help. The best photo is usually the one that reflects how you know and love your dog. If they’re always dashing around, a more dynamic pose might be perfect. You can read more about my process on my website and if you need any guidance, please do send me a message via my contact page. Don’t hesitate to get in touch at any time.
