Welcome to our latest pet portrait blog post about the Oil Portrait of Lucy the Poodle. We were honoured to welcome back a returning client, Tracy Maguire from Washington, USA, for another very special commission. This time an oil portrait of her beloved poodle, Lucy. Tracy previously commissioned a painting of her poodle Curly. When Tracey got in contact again, we were thrilled but at the same time sad as we knew one of her beautiful dogs must have passed away.
Lucy was a sweet little rescue dog who joined Tracy and her family five years ago. Although she faced health challenges, including heart disease, they gave her the very best care and filled her life with love and comfort. As Tracy put it, “She gave us her all.”
Tracy and her husband wanted Lucy to wear her bright and cheerful costume hat. Similar to Curly had in her portrait. We suggested a 16 x 16 inch head and chest composition, which allowed plenty of room for Lucy’s beautiful curly ears and colourful accessories. We created a mock-up to help Tracey visualise how the piece would be and they felt it was perfect.
When they saw the final painting, Tracy wrote. “We’re overwhelmed to see how Nicholas captured the love (and the life) that was our dear Lucy! We wouldn’t change a stroke!”

The Portrait Close Up
We have included some close up photos of Lucy’s portrait, where you can see Nicholas’s hand and brush at work. These images give a wonderful sense of the texture, from the woven straw of her hat to the playful softness of each colourful pompom.

Nicholas painted Lucy’s fur with a soft, delicate touch, capturing the impression of her beautiful curls.

The Portrait Framed
We framed Lucy’s painting to match the one of Curly. If you scroll down you can see them displayed on the wall together.
“Lucy’s eyes (like Curly’s) are full of the love she gave everyone… We couldn’t be happier. Your portraits certainly exemplify our belief that rescue dogs deserve the best of everything in their second life.”

The portrait arrived safely in Washington and Tracy shared a wonderful photo of Lucy’s and Curly’s portraits hanging side by side. She told us,
Dear Melanie and Nicholas,
Your portrait of our Lucy arrived last week in perfect condition.
It took us a few days to choose a display location as we wanted Lucy’s portrait and the portrait you painted several years ago of, our dear Curly, to be displayed side by side.
As before, we’re overwhelmed by how Nicholas is able to bring the photographs of our beloved companions to life on canvas. Lucy’s eyes (like Curly’s) are full of the love she gave everyone. Thank you!
We’ve always believed rescue dogs, like Curly and Lucy, deserve the best of everything in their second life and your portraits certainly exemplify this motto.
We couldn’t be happier and as we mentioned before, we will always return for memorials of our sweet companions.
So, PLEASE never contemplate any retirement plans!
Thank you again! Yours sincerely,
Tracy and Paul Maguire
