Welcome to my latest blog post about the Bengal Cat Portrait of Lucy Leo and Lily. Returning client Kevin contacted me to commission a new pencil portrait of his three beautiful Bengal cats: Lucy, Leo, and Lily. I previously drew a portrait of Lucy and Leo back in 2018, which you can see here – Framed Cat Pencil Drawing – 2018 Portrait
Since welcoming Lily into their family, Kevin and Erika felt it was only fair to include her in a portrait with Lucy and Leo. This new portrait was to be a surprise anniversary gift for Kevin’s wife, Erika. He let me know that she had mentioned the idea many times saying, “We have to get Melanie to draw that photo.” Kevin always agreed then quickly changed the subject so he could keep it a surprise!
The pencil drawing is 18 x 14 inches in size. It features all three Bengals sitting together with their tails sticking out. Each cat has its own distinctive markings and personality, which I tried to capture as accurately as possible. Bengal cats have such stunning, bold patterns in their fur, with striking eyes and alert poses. I used a combination of smooth shading and fine pencil lines to bring out the detail in each of their coats and keep the drawing soft but realistic.
After I sent the final scan, Kevin wrote…
“The portrait looks great. No changes are needed. I’m very pleased with it. Erika is going to love it.”

Once it arrived safely, Kevin managed to sneak it into the house without Erika noticing. A few days later, he gave it to her early, writing:
“I gave the portrait to Erika the day before our anniversary. We were sitting drinking some wine and it seemed like a good time. She was very surprised. She really loves it.”

Later, Kevin kindly sent me a lovely follow up message. Also a photo of Erika with the two portraits I’ve created for them –
“I just realized we never sent you a photo of the portrait. I just took a few shots of Erika and the two portraits you did. Sorry for the delay. Erika wanted me to tell you that she was struggling to keep her eyes open because of the sun. That’s why she doesn’t look happier!”
