Welcome to our latest blog post where we chat about the Harlan Crow Paintings which Nicholas has been honoured to paint recently. Returning client Harlan Crow and his family commissioned two portraits of their dogs Pippa and Gus for Christmas. However at the time they contacted Nicholas, he was fully booked.
With the detailed work they were requesting similar to their other portraits, there was unfortunately no way of fitting them in. It was impossible to have both paintings completed and sent to the Harlen Crow’s family and framed, prior to Christmas. So the idea was to create some kind of booklet to give at Christmas. It would show the photos and mock-ups of the portraits. It would also show what would be starting in the New Year!
We feel incredibly honoured to have worked with Harlan Crow and his family again, especially considering Harlan is a private collector and art enthusiast. Also along with his family, shares a deep love and appreciation for their dogs.
Harlan Crow Paintings in Progress
Nicholas began painting the portraits of Pippa, a beautiful Shiba Inu, and Gus, a Labrador with his favourite toy by his side, at the start of the New Year and thoroughly enjoyed painting them. He loves to paint the full body portraits with background scenes and these were no exception. Here is a mid way stage of the portrait of Gus who sits in the grounds of the Harlan Crow Estate.

This is the finished painting of Gus. You can see the beautiful trees and lake behind Gus are a wonderful backdrop giving the perfect lighting on Gus.

Here is the finished painting of Pippa who is sitting by the front steps of the Harlan Crow’s beautiful residence.

All Of The Paintings Displayed
These paintings now hang alongside earlier portraits we completed of Patsy and Otis. As well as a large-scale landscape portrait of Kipper. Kippers painting is set against a breathtakingly beautiful view overlooking the autumn hills near New York.

Each portrait has been beautifully framed in carved wood. What makes them truly unique is the way the family chose to personalise them. They commissioned a skilled wood engraver to decorate each frame with symbolic imagery that reflects their lives. From their children’s school activities and sports teams, to family traditions and meaningful places. These delicate carvings not only frame the artwork but also tell a deeper story, adding another layer of sentiment and memory to each piece.

These portraits aren’t just paintings — they’re heirlooms. Created to honour the pets who’ve shared in so many chapters of their family’s life. Working with Harlan Crow’s family has been a real joy. It’s a privilege to see our artwork become part of something so personal and meaningful.

We hope that you have enjoyed viewing the paintings framed and the incredible work the framer did with them.

Commission Your Own Painting
We have truly loved being part of this family’s journey through their dog portraits. It’s been a joy to see how each piece has found its place in their beautiful staircase gallery. With paintings of Patsy and Otis from a few years ago, which you can read about here – Patsy the Labrador. Then Otis the Bulldog portrait, it’s safe to say their collection of Nicholas’s paintings has grown into something truly special.
We hope you have enjoyed our blog post about the Harlan Crow Paintings. We hope to work with them again one day. Although at this point, they may need to start a new wall for them! Would you like a portrait of your dog? Visit pet-portraitartist.com. We hope to work with you soon!
