Welcome to my latest Bespoke Pencil Pet Portrait – Montage Drawing in Graphite of Khona. I was very excited to get started on this drawing as I don’t tend to do many montage or collage portrait per year and it’s always amazing to get stuck into a drawing like this. The drawing was an 18 x 14 inch pencil montage drawing of Khona, a beautiful Pomsky. So she is a mix between a Husky and a Pomeranian. This commission was created as an anniversary gift from Josh in the USA for his wife, who absolutely adores Khona. And I can see why, scroll down to see a photo of Khona with the finished portrait. Completely adorable!!
Josh reached out via WhatsApp, which many of my clients now prefer over email, and asked if I could create a collage style montage portrait. I have specialised in these unusual compositions for years. I can’t even remember when my first one was, but it was back in the late 1990’s. It allows me to combine multiple photos into a single detailed drawing. I love drawing them and my clients always love the outcome!
The Art of a Pencil Montage Portrait
Montage drawings are an excellent way to tell a pet’s story. In this portrait, we captured different stages of Khona’s life, from a fluffy puppy to a confident adult. Each element was carefully planned, ensuring a cohesive and balanced composition. The pumpkin added a lovely seasonal touch, making the artwork even more meaningful.
Unlike traditional single subject portraits, a montage provides a way to celebrate a pet’s journey, personality, and the special moments they have shared with their owner. I have drawn portraits of dogs, cats and horses this way and its really great to capture all the different sides of them, running, jumping, sleeping, playing, even with their owners. I don’t really know many other artists that provide this kind of service, so I shall keep offering it!
Packaging – A Beautiful Gift Experience
Because this drawing was an anniversary gift, my packaging works so well for gifts. The perfect unboxing experience. I always carefully wrap the portraits in cellophane, then in soft tissue paper, placed into a black presentation box, secured with an elegant turquoise ribbon. For extra safety during shipping, I add multiple layers of protective foam wrap and packaged it in a double walled cardboard box. Here you can see a photo of the portrait just prior to packing.
